Ward 46


I wanted to give you an idea of what my floor is like here at Walter Reed. I reported tdoay. We did not do much, just a quick tour of the floor and met with my Head Nurse for a few minutes. Next week we finish up some training and then prepare to use our fursing degrees!

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGICAL STEPDOWN UNIT (WARD 46)
Ward 46 is a 14-bed stepdown surgical care unit providing pre-operative and post-operative care to cardiothoracic surgical patients.
Care provided includes the evaluation and surgical treatment of cardiac (acquired and congenital), pulmonary, esophageal, mediastinal, and general chest diseases.
Care is provided to eligible health care recipients of both sexes and all ages. The predominant population are adults (to include the elderly). Infants, toddlers and pre-school children represent the typical pediatric population served, with school age children and adolescents on an infrequent basis.
Operating 24 hours a day, it is organized to prepare patients and families for cardiothoracic surgery, to provide the environment, equipment and personnel necessary to recognize complications and problems which threaten life, prolong recovery, or cause unnecessary harm or pain, and to prepare the patients and families for discharge and follow-up care.

Way to go Burdine! You could be Uncle Jim's assistant from the sounds of it! May you learn a lot...not even so much job related but people and experiences. I pray this 3 year stint will be life changing for you. Blessings on ya Elizabeth!
